At a panel discussion, Mayor Karen Bass criticized multiple agencies, including the LA Department of Water and Power and the Fire Department, for their roles in the city's poor response to the January wildfires. She highlighted systemic failures such as broken fire hydrants and water supply issues while also suggesting accountability may fall on former Fire Chief Kristin Crowley. Bass also pointed to the insurance industry as a significant barrier to recovery, asserting that the city is making swift progress in the rebuilding process with permits already being issued.
The mayor stated, 'The insurance industry is the biggest obstacle right now, because it dictates whether people will be properly compensated, and able to rebuild.'
Bass noted, 'The rebuilding has been going very fast... we issued our first permits to rebuild within two months with about 200 people in the pipeline now.'
