Los Angeles Unified students have achieved significant improvements in math and English scores, surpassing pre-pandemic levels as reported by Superintendent Alberto Carvalho. The gains indicate solid educational progress and represent a new high watermark in performance. Despite overall progress, many students, particularly from underrepresented backgrounds, are still not meeting state standards, with only 46.5% achieving grade-level proficiency in English Language Arts and 36.7% in math. The results showcase a mix of achievement and areas needing further attention.
"The coolest thing is that the district, despite all that this community went through, has now reached the highest-ever performance at all levels in English language arts and math," Carvalho said.
"We didn't just take it back to pre-pandemic levels. We exceeded pre-pandemic levels of performance," he said. "We established a new high watermark."
Morgan Scott Polikoff stated, "indeed impressive and seem to have, in most cases, more than erased losses attributable to the pandemic ... This is an important development and the district should be proud of it."
"Large proportions of students in the district, especially students from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, are still performing below state standard," Polikoff said.
