"While the LAX letters will be removed from their current location, they will be later relocated to ensure compatibility with the new road designs and integrated into the broader improvements planned for the area,"
"Until then, the letters will be safely stored at a LAWA yard just across the street from the current site."
"That will become as much a symbol of Los Angeles as the Hollywood sign,"
On Sept. 4, crews began deconstructing the 32-foot-tall LAX letters one character at a time, starting with the X. Officials originally expected about two nights per letter, but after a week only the X had been fully removed. The temporary removal is required to finish the roadway portion of the Airfield & Terminal Modernization Program. The letters will be relocated to fit new road designs and stored at a LAWA yard across the street until reinstallation. The sign was added in 2000 as part of an $80 million beautification effort ahead of that summer’s convention. The modernization will revamp 4.4 miles of roadway, add pedestrian bridges, new signs, improve access to economy parking, and separate regular from airport traffic to smooth transitions.
