"Hours later, doctors at L.A. County-USC Medical Center told Islas he would never see out of his right eye again, according to Islas and his attorney, Jamal Tooson. Police did not attempt to render aid at the scene, Tooson said."
"My client was doing nothing wrong. He was posing zero threat to anyone. And in a moment, LAPD has shattered his life, said Tooson, whose claim demands $100 million in damages."
Jesus Javier Islas, 23 and autistic, attended a January 31 immigration enforcement protest near the Metropolitan Detention Center in downtown Los Angeles. Video shows him standing still while leaning on a scooter when he was struck in the face with a less-lethal projectile that left bright green paint on his face and clothes. The impact caused permanent blindness in his right eye. Doctors at L.A. County-USC Medical Center confirmed he would never regain vision in that eye. Video footage shows no confrontation occurring near Islas at the time of impact, and police did not provide aid. His attorney filed a legal claim demanding $100 million in damages, asserting his client posed no threat.
