Kamran Hakimi, 61, will receive nearly $50 million from the City of Los Angeles after suffering a severe brain injury from being hit by a sanitation truck while crossing at a green light. The driver made an unsafe right turn, resulting in a jury finding the city liable for negligence. Hakimi, a father of five and former real estate worker, was left in a coma following the incident. The city acknowledged driver's failure to yield, but contested the extent of Hakimi's damages due to his comatose state. The jury awarded him a total of $48.8 million for various damages, including future pain and suffering and medical expenses.
Mr. Hakimi's life, and the lives of his family, are forever changed due to the negligence of a City of Los Angeles employee, stated attorney Rahul Ravipudi. This verdict upholds the dignity of the life Mr. Hakimi enjoyed before this tragedy and we are grateful to the jury who carefully considered all the evidence and provided Mr. Hakimi with the means necessary to get the higher level of care he so desperately needs.
The city admitted that the driver failed to yield to Hakimi, but disputed the damages suffered, arguing that his life expectancy was limited and that the value of his non-economic damages was minimized because he was in a comatose state.
