Journalist and historian found dead at Bay Area park
"Brian was the historian of the libertarian movement. He lovingly and comprehensively portrayed the colorful characters in the libertarian world."
"Brian's contributions to the art scenes in L.A. and San Francisco were monumental. His passing leaves so many people and so many systems impoverished."
"He was best known for his books on the history of the libertarian movement, including his 2008 masterwork "Radicals for Capitalism: A Freewheeling History of the Modern American Libertarian Movement.""
Brian Doherty, a prominent libertarian historian and senior editor at Reason Magazine, was found dead at Battery Yates in Sausalito after falling Thursday evening while attending an art gathering. Born in Brooklyn in 1968 and raised in Florida, Doherty moved to California in the 1990s and became deeply involved in the art and libertarian communities. He authored influential works including "Radicals for Capitalism: A Freewheeling History of the Modern American Libertarian Movement" and "This Is Burning Man: The Rise of a New American Underground." His contributions to libertarian historiography and art scenes in Los Angeles and San Francisco were widely recognized. Physical limitations from recent ailments requiring a cane likely contributed to his accidental fall.
