Dodgers share offseason update on Tommy Edman's ankle trouble
"The Los Angeles Dodgers weren't able to fully reap the benefits of Tommy Edman's versatility during the 2025 season due to lingering right ankle trouble that carried over from last year. It resulted in Edman primarily playing second base despite the Dodgers taking measures during the second half of the season in effort to allow for the potential of playing center field. Edman wound up doing so sparingly in the World Series, and continued to assure his ankle was healthy enough to remain in the lineup."
"According to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic, Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes shared that the plan is for Edman to have surgery on his right ankle next week, which will allow for a full recovery by early Spring Training 2026: Tommy Edman is having surgery on his right ankle next week, Brandon Gomes said. Still expected to be ready around start of spring training. - Fabian Ardaya (@FabianArdaya) November 11, 2025"
"Edman first landed on the injured list in early May due to right ankle inflammation and his return was slightly delayed due to having trouble with getting past the hurdle of running without any discomfort. After Edman aggravated his ankle while running the bases against the Boston Red Sox, he was a late scratch from the Dodgers' lineup on July 28 and couldn't pinch-hit in a key situation that game. There was the possibility of going on the IL the next day, but that instead wound up being Hyeseong Kim."
Tommy Edman battled persistent right ankle problems through 2024 and 2025, which limited his defensive versatility and kept him primarily at second base. The Dodgers attempted to preserve the option of using him in center field late in the season, but he only played center sparingly, including limited duty in the World Series. Edman experienced multiple ankle setbacks, including IL stints after inflammation and a sprain, and returned after a cautious five-week recovery. Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes announced a planned right-ankle surgery next week intended to allow full recovery by early Spring Training 2026.
