"What Will the Dodgers Do Without Ben Rortvedt? Rortvedt came to the Dodgers in 2025 at the trade deadline, and came up to the big leagues in September when catchers Will Smith and Dalton Rushing landed on the injured list. He made 18 appearances and received heavy praise from manager Dave Roberts during the regular season, and found his way onto the postseason roster."
"Phillips, 31, played for L.A. from 2021-25, but spent most of his last season with the Dodgers on the injured list after undergoing Tommy John Surgery. The veteran reliever underwent his surgery June 2025, meaning he won't be available for the beginning of the season. He could return before the end of 2026, though, and gives the Dodgers another solid option coming out of the bullpen."
Los Angeles designated catcher Ben Rortvedt for assignment five days after claiming him off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds after re-signing Evan Phillips. Rortvedt joined the Dodgers at the 2025 trade deadline, was called up in September when Will Smith and Dalton Rushing were injured, made 18 appearances, and was on the postseason roster. Smith and Rushing are healthy, and the team has kept fewer than three catchers on the 40-man roster all offseason. Phillips underwent Tommy John surgery in June 2025 and will not be available at the start of 2026, though he could return later that year. Phillips has 201 appearances and a 2.22 ERA as a high-leverage reliever.
