Dodgers Call Up Catcher With Dalton Rushing Going on Injured List

The catcher is a career .132 hitter with a .364 OPS across 129 at-bats in the big leagues. Smith is dealing with a bone bruise in his right hand, but manager Dave Roberts said the 30-year-old will likely be able to avoid a stint on the injured list."

"'I think with the results that we've received, I think that we can avoid the IL,' Roberts said of the injured catcher. Smith was removed in the third inning of Wednesday's 3-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates after a foul tip directly hit his right hand in the second inning. Ahead of Thursday's series finale, the Dodgers called up minor league catcher Ben Rortvedt for depth behind the rookie, Rushing. Rortvedt will be the Dodgers' starting catcher Saturday, with Robinson available off the bench."
