""I think the rule was put in place to try to encourage people to do it, to incentivize people," Friedman said. "So yeah, I think they missed.""
"If he were to start a game as a hitter and later enter out of the bullpen, he would be barred from contiuing as a hitter when his time pitching in relief is up."
""Walker Buehler was a starting pitcher for us last year, and finished out Game 5 of the World Series," Friedman said. "So you never know how things are going to play out.""
The Dodgers are exploring using Shohei Ohtani as a bullpen option during the postseason. Current rules prevent a player who starts as a hitter and later pitches in relief from continuing as a hitter after pitching. Ohtani has made 13 starts this season and remains eligible to bat even after being removed from the mound. Andrew Friedman criticized the rule as missing its intended mark and noted the rule appears designed to incentivize two-way usage. Friedman said changing the rule to allow relief appearances would be an offseason consideration and that in-season rule changes are not reasonable. The Dodgers still consider Ohtani relieving if game situations warrant it.
