200 Marines head to downtown LA, in the Corps' most politically fraught mission
Briefly

200 Marines have been deployed to Los Angeles to secure federal properties, marking a significant military response to civil unrest. This deployment comes after objections from California's Governor Gavin Newsom and marks the Marines’ first operational involvement in urban law enforcement in the city. Task Force-51's Maj. Gen. Scott Sherman emphasized that while military personnel are trained for embassy protection, this mission represents a challenging environment. The transition from the California National Guard to Marines indicates a shift in how federal forces are addressing local protests, despite concerns regarding the Marines' preparation for crowd control.
Starting today, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines will focus on the protection of federal property and personnel,” said Task Force-51 mission commander Maj. Gen. Scott Sherman on Friday during a media roundtable with reporters.
