Tanya Tanna became the first UK patient to undergo a pioneering keyhole breast reconstruction surgery after her mastectomy due to cancer. Developed by surgeons at the Royal Free Hospital, this innovative technique modifies traditional DIEP flap surgery by reducing the incision size from 10-12cm to 2-3cm, leading to quicker recovery times. Tanna reported minimal pain and the ability to walk the day after her eight-hour surgery. Surgeons hope to further enhance the procedure with robotic technology in the future, marking a significant advancement in cancer surgery.
Tanya Tanna expressed her relief and gratitude, stating, "After this complex surgery, lasting eight hours, I was expecting a large amount of pain, but I felt no pain."
Mr. Dariush Nikkhah remarked on the procedure's impact, saying, "The Royal Free Hospital is now one of the few centres in the world which can offer this type of surgery, which improves recovery significantly."
