Windows Update fails successfully, says Microsoft
Briefly

After the April 2025 release of Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) update KB5057589, users may see a 'ERROR_INSTALL_FAILURE' message in Windows Update. Microsoft clarifies this is a false alarm that does not affect device functionality. The error appears if the update is installed while another update is pending a reboot but typically does not indicate an actual failure. Users are advised that normal device function continues and to disregard this error message until it clears itself in the next daily scan. This situation is reminiscent of past occurrences involving WinRE updates and misleading error messages.
The error 0x80070643 after the WinRE update is a false indicator; users can simply ignore it as it doesn't affect functionality.
Microsoft reassured users that the update is normally applied successfully upon restart, despite Windows Update displaying 'failed'.
Even though the error might momentarily concern users, they are encouraged to continue normal activities until the issue resolves itself.
This isn't the first instance where a Windows Recovery Environment update has led to a misleading error message.
