The National Grid is building its largest substation, Uxbridge Moor, in Buckinghamshire to accommodate growing electricity demands from datacentres in West London. The facility will support a dozen new datacentres and is part of a five-year £35 billion investment in the UK electricity network. The new substation will help alleviate capacity issues from the existing infrastructure, designated to connect around 1.8GW of additional capacity. This expansion aims to bolster the electricity supply while stimulating economic growth in the region.
The new site forms part of National Grid's upgrade to its transmission network to meet growing demand for electricity, ensuring it can continue to support the growth of new sectors, such as datacentres.
The requests from datacentres to connect at Uxbridge Moor will require around 1.8GW of new capacity, equivalent to adding a mid-sized city to the grid on the outskirts of London.
