Leaders from the University of Cambridge have warned that the UK may lag in commercializing its world-class research unless more support is offered to academic spin-out companies. During a showcase event, they highlighted that despite the UK's scientific excellence, it currently lacks the investment and infrastructure necessary to transform breakthrough research into significant global businesses. Notably, Cambridge's vice-chancellor emphasized the university's high performance in spin-out formation, yet acknowledged challenges in scaling these ventures into internationally competitive firms.
The world isn't waiting for UK and European science to commercialise. Founders in Silicon Valley, Shenzhen and Bangalore are already building, and very, very quickly.
Cambridge is by many measures the highest-performing innovation ecosystem in Europe. International investors are recognizing that we're punching above our weight - but we need to go further.
