Amazon's book sale crashes Independent Bookstore Day-and readers are pushing back
Briefly

Independent Bookstore Day, celebrated on April 26, aims to recognize the importance of independent bookstores as community hubs. This year, however, the event faces an unusual challenge as Amazon hosts a major book sale on the same day, prompting frustration among booksellers and readers. Many are using platforms like BookTok to advocate for supporting local bookstores instead of shopping online. Independent Bookstore Day has evolved since its inception in California in 2013, growing to include over 1,600 participating stores this year, emphasizing the vital cultural and communal roles these bookstores play.
"So if you didn't know-and it's okay if you didn't because I feel like Amazon is working overtime to try and overshadow the whole day-this Saturday, April 26th, is Independent Bookstore Day," TikTok user torithatnerd said in a video posted Thursday.
"Independent bookstores are not just stores, they're community centers and locals anchors," Schoech wrote. "They are entire universes of ideas that contain the possibility of real serendipity."
