'You have to be a bit mad to try this': inside London's most daring new cinema
Briefly

The Nickel Cinema is a new cult cinema in London, started by Dominic Hicks, who transitioned from pop-up events to a permanent venue. After selling out multiple initial shows, Hicks successfully raised funds to launch this unique space. Now open, the cinema showcases an eclectic mix of films, including classics and rare titles, with decor that reflects its quirky theme. Hicks' dedication and passion have made The Nickel a vibrant addition to London's indie cinema scene, and the initial response indicates a bright future ahead.
Hicks explained, 'The plan was always to build an actual space, so these pop-ups gave me a means to get more experience, which I definitely needed since I was pretty green in the realms of programming and projection.'
After successfully launching a fundraiser that exceeded expectations, Hicks said, 'It created pressure that if I had failed to deliver, I probably would have had to leave the country!'
He added, 'You have to be a bit mad to try to pull off something like this, but I would have died trying.'
The Nickel Cinema now proudly boasts a collection of around 60 prints, including cult classics and obscure films never released on other formats.
