The summer heat in Croydon creates a vibrant atmosphere, yet as night falls, crime concerns rise. Shopkeepers feel the need for additional security due to thefts and drug-related gang activity. The Metropolitan Police has installed fixed live facial recognition cameras in Croydon, marking the first permanent installation of its kind in London. This technology aims to enhance safety, having already contributed to over 1,000 arrests citywide. While shopkeeper Mohammed Kamzi acknowledges the benefits, he also voices apprehensions, highlighting increased crime rates and diminished police presence in the area.
"The Met says it's arrested more than 1,000 people by using the technology so far across London, including 93 registered sex offenders and several others in breach of court orders."
"This technology is making London safer by removing dangerous offenders. It's saving officers valuable time and delivering quicker, more accurate results," said Lindsey Chiswick.
