What you need to know as Hackney heads into mayor's election
"Hackney has had an elected mayor since 2022, with Labour holding the mayoralty continuously since then. Philip Glanville, the previous mayor, resigned, leading to a by-election."
"The mayor is the political leader of the council and appoints a cabinet made up of elected councillors who manage specific portfolios such as finance and community safety."
"All 32 of London's boroughs have a mayor, but in most cases their duties are ceremonial. An elected mayor, however, has significant powers in their borough."
"The voting system for the mayor has changed to first-past-the-post, allowing voters to select one candidate, with the candidate receiving the most votes winning."
The mayoral election in Hackney will take place on May 7, with voting from 07:00 to 22:00 BST. Five candidates are running: Vahid Almasi, Zoe Garbett, Tareke Gregg, Eva Steinhardt, and Caroline Woodley. Philip Glanville previously held the position with 59.1% of the vote before resigning. Caroline Woodley won a by-election to complete his term. Unlike ceremonial borough mayors, elected mayors have significant powers, controlling local services and appointing a cabinet. The voting system has changed to first-past-the-post since the last election.
