"A west London Labour councillor and current Pensions Board Chair was ordered to pay more than 4,500 in outstanding council tax accrued amid a dispute over the classification of his basement. The council was able to obtain a liability order, a court order enabling the local authority to collect unpaid debts, and received the full 4,703.66 owed in February 2024. Cllr Patel was contacted by the LDRS, though did not respond to a request for comment."
"In a much-delayed response to a Freedom of Information (FoI) request submitted by the LDRS, Cllr Patel was revealed as the only member at Hammersmith and Fulham Council who has received a court summons in the previous three financial years. The FoI was also filed with Kensington and Chelsea, Westminster and the City of London Corporation, none of which had any councillors recorded."
Cllr Patel, a west London Labour councillor and Chair of the Pensions Board, was ordered to pay £4,703.66 in outstanding council tax accrued amid a dispute over whether his basement should be classed as a separate property. Hammersmith and Fulham Council obtained a liability order and received the full amount in February 2024. A council spokesperson said Patel continued to pay council tax on the rest of the property and settled the basement tax as soon as he learned he had to pay while the Valuation Office issue was being resolved. The FoI response showed he was the only councillor at Hammersmith and Fulham to receive a court summons in the past three financial years. The summons covered unpaid tax for 2020/21, 2021/22 and 2022/23.
