Tipperary councillor blasts lack of action on litter fines - 'We may as well have been talking to the clouds
A call was made in Tipperary to increase litter fines to deter offenders. At a Nenagh Municipal District meeting, Fianna Fáil councillor John Carroll said the current €150 fine had been in place for many years and urged raising it to €500. He criticized the lack of progress on earlier calls. Sharon Scully from the environment section said litter fines would increase later in the year, specifically from September, to €250. She said the requested amount would not be met but the fines would still be increased. She also said figures for last year were not available and that projections for 2025 to 2026 would be provided. Earlier, an offender was fined €12,000 for illegal dumping under the Waste Management Act.
"In relation to prosecutions for litter offences by this council, in last year, has the number of prosecutions increased or decreased?"
"Is the cost of litter fines still €150? Because that's the same as it was when I came on this council well over 20 years ago and I think we should write to the Department to say for it to be a real deterrant that fine definitely needs to be increased up to €500."
"In relation to the litter fines, litter fines are going to be increased from September. They're going up to €250, which isn't quite what you asked for, but they are being increased. Ms Scully also added that the figures for litter fine offences for last year weren't available."
"On the figures between 2025 and 2026, we'll look into it, and we'll give a projection to the end of the year whether we expect it to be up or down. Earlier this year, it emerged that one offender in Tipperary was fined €12,000 for illegal dumping under the Waste Management Act."
