This London borough will have the lowest council tax in the UK in 2026/27
"Just as it has done in previous years, Wandsworth plans to freeze its council tax, only increasing the element that is spent on social care. That means that from April 6, average band D households in Wandsworth can expect to pay £1,028.21 in council tax, which is an increase of £30.46. At the moment, the average council tax across the UK is £1,770."
"RECOMMENDED: Council tax is set to double for property owners in one London borough. The borough's council leader Simon Hogg said: 'Value for money is at the heart of everything we do. Wandsworth has one of the lowest levels of debt and some of the highest financial reserves in London. This allows us to freeze the main element of council tax, keep more money in your pocket and invest in what matters to you.'"
Wandsworth will increase council tax by two percent for 2026/27 while freezing the main council tax element for the fourth consecutive year and only raising the social care portion. Average band D households in Wandsworth will pay £1,028.21, an increase of £30.46, significantly below the UK average of £1,770, giving the borough the lowest council tax in the country. Wandsworth was one of five councils granted permission to exceed the normal five percent cap but chose not to. Council leader Simon Hogg cited low debt and high reserves as enabling the freeze. The plan will be considered by the council’s finance committee in February.
