Lock keepers on the River Thames are initiating strike action, prompted by the GMB Union's concerns over safety due to a significant shortage of trained staff. With only 52 staff members employed versus the required 90 during peak season, the union emphasizes the critical need for addressing staffing issues. The strike vote saw overwhelming support with a 98% turnout, 90% of whom voted in favor of action. Union representatives highlight the dedication of the workers and their desire for safety for river users as their primary motivation for this drastic action.
Our River Thames weir and lock keepers are passionate, dedicated workers. They live and work with river users and don't want to go on strike. But there are only 52 staff doing the work of 90 - it's just not safe.
Staff had gone 'above and beyond' to keep people safe but 'enough is enough'. They now feel withdrawing their labour is the only way to get their message across to the Environment Agency.
