Weir and lock keepers along the River Thames have suspended planned strikes after a last-minute offer from the Environment Agency (EA). The GMB Union had announced a 90% vote in favor of industrial action due to safety concerns stemming from staff shortages, with planned 'work to rule' action set to begin soon. The EA's updated proposal includes increasing staffing levels to at least 80 during peak summer months, addressing concerns for public safety and worker conditions.
Kevin Brandstatter emphasized that the last thing River Thames weir and lock keepers wanted was to take industrial action, as they were deeply concerned about public safety and their own.
GMB Union confirmed that the Environment Agency's new deal will increase staffing on the river to at least 80 in the summer, improving safety conditions.
