Transport for London is facing legal action from the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain over delays in issuing licenses for private hire drivers. The union claims that these delays are systemic and have severely impacted drivers’ livelihoods, with some having lost their homes and vehicles. There are 108,000 private hire drivers in London, many working for Uber. Drivers report severe financial strain due to the inability to work without valid licenses. Tragic cases include a driver who died waiting for a license renewal, emphasizing the serious consequences of these delays.
Many of these drivers are not high earners and have limited savings, so even a relatively short delay in TfL issuing them with a licence can have a significant financial impact because they require one to legally work in London.
His family say they believe his death was linked to the delay as he was unable to work and was stressed and anxious.
