Sutton makes history' electing its first ever councillor from Hong Kong
Briefly

The recent by-election in Sutton Central has yielded a significant victory for first-time candidate Richard Choi of the Liberal Democrats, who garnered 1,291 votes. With a turnout of 27.29%, Choi's win highlights his commitment to the community, particularly in regenerating the high street and enhancing safety. Moving from Hong Kong in 2008, Choi represents a notable demographic within the town, home to a large ex-pat community. His experience includes a decade at Nokia Mobile and various community roles, reflecting his dedication to local issues alongside fellow Lib Dem Councillors Ed Parsley and Cryss Mennaceur.
Mr. Choi, who moved from Hong Kong to Sutton in 2008, told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS): We are making a small history here. Sutton has one of the largest Hong Kong ex-pat communities in the country.
When asked about his goals as a councillor, he said he's committed to helping regenerate the high street, a key project led by Sutton's Lib Dem council.
Both Lewis and the Lib Dem team were pleased with the result and said they planned to celebrate with drinks at the pub.
Choi, who spent more than ten years working as an industrial design specialist, has also been involved in local community work, serving as a governor at Sutton College.
