Due to difficulty in recruiting lifeguards, several beaches in the county will operate without them, as discussed in a recent council meeting. Councillor Declan Bree highlighted low pay as a critical barrier to attracting lifeguards, who are essential in ensuring public safety at beaches. He emphasized the demanding nature of the job, including training and surveillance responsibilities, which are often undervalued. A recent report suggested improved pay and contractual recognition for lifeguards, comparable to that of specialist firefighters, reflecting their significant role in public safety.
In my opinion the rate of pay and the recognition of the role our lifeguards play leave a lot to be desired. Lifeguards deserve proper remuneration given their level of responsibility.
Lifeguards hold very responsible positions because they ensure swimmers' safety and well-being at our public beaches, making their roles crucial in preventing accidents.
