Street furniture to be used for facial recognition
Briefly

The Metropolitan Police is implementing a pilot program in Croydon, London, where facial recognition cameras will be installed on street furniture. The system, which maps unique facial features to compare against watch-lists, follows earlier temporary deployments. While the cameras will be permanent, they only activate when officers are present to address concerns over privacy and data usage. Critics argue this establishes unwarranted surveillance, while the police assert that the technology addresses serious local crime, having previously led to over 500 arrests.
The Met is committed to making London safer, using data and technology to identify offenders that pose a risk to our communities.
Under the new pilot, while the cameras will be permanent fixtures on furniture, they will only be switched on when officers are using the technology in the area.
