"London's ancient Smithfield and Billingsgate fresh food markets are set to move to the Royal Docks in Newham after the collapse of a previous scheme to relocate to Dagenham. The new preferred site agreed by market traders after talks with the City of London Corporation and the GLA would see the meat and fish markets relocate in 2028. The latest plan follows the scrapping of a move to a huge new market site in Dagenham last year because of spiralling costs."
"Traders are expecting to move out of their current market locations in the City and at Poplar by 2028 following a decision by the Corporation to redevelop the sites. However, this is still subject to Parliamentary approval. There has been a meat market at Smithfield for more than 900 years while Billingsgate moved from its original site on Lower Thames Street in the City to Poplar in 1982."
"The Royal Docks are owned by the GLA which has planning consent for 750,000sqft of development and a new boatyard for London. The Royal Docks is London's only Enterprise Zone and is part of the Royal Docks & Beckton Riverside Opportunity Area. It is estimated that the move will bring around 750 million in local spending, over 2,200 jobs and a 130 million boost to Newham's economy."
Smithfield and Billingsgate fresh food markets are planned to move to Albert Island in the Royal Docks, Newham, with a target relocation in 2028. The move follows the cancellation of a larger Dagenham scheme due to rising costs. The Royal Docks site sits within the M25 and requires planning permission from Newham Borough Council and Parliamentary approval. The GLA owns the Royal Docks and holds consent for 750,000 sqft of development and a new boatyard. The relocation is estimated to generate about £750 million in local spending, over 2,200 jobs and a £130 million boost to Newham. Traders have largely agreed to transfer operations; the markets will be called New Billingsgate and New Smithfield and will include an onsite food school.
