Donald Trump used a UN address to call the London mayor "terrible, terrible" and claimed London was being steered toward sharia law. Sadiq Khan accused Trump of being racist, sexist, misogynistic and Islamophobic and criticised senior Labour figures for not calling out the rhetoric. Wes Streeting praised Khan for standing up for difference of background and opinion, while Pat McFadden defended London's reputation as a global city and declined to directly address Trump's remarks. Trump has publicly attacked Khan since 2015 after Khan criticised a proposal to ban Muslims from traveling to the US.
