The CHAIN homelessness database's annual report revealed a staggering 13,231 rough sleepers in London for 2024/25, marking a 10% increase from the previous year. Notably, first-time rough sleepers rose by 5%, while individuals living on the streets increased by an alarming 27%. Over the last decade, the total has surged 63%. Rick Henderson from Homeless Link expressed deep concern over the record levels of homelessness and emphasized the urgent need for systemic changes, such as increased focus on prevention, supported housing, and effective interventions for those facing complex challenges.
It is devastating to see the number of people forced to sleep rough in London last year soar to record levels, with more and more people effectively trapped and living on the streets.
The Government has committed to protect homelessness spending and established new programmes for homelessness prevention and adults with complex needs in the CSR.
It must ease the silted-up system by investing in effective supported housing for those who need more than just a house to live in and specialist Housing First interventions for those with multiple and complex needs.
