Road users avoiding Tipperary road due to 'deplorable' conditions
A councillor criticised the condition of the N62 between Thurles and the Offaly border as deplorable and disgraceful. People are avoiding the road because of its poor state, and the councillor warned that a serious accident is likely to occur. The Road Safety Authority interactive map highlights serious collision locations, and the most recent available data shows a serious crash on the route in 2024. In October 2024, a midday crash between Thurles and Templemore left a driver and passenger seriously injured. The district engineer said the council will apply for funding, but available money is limited and the district must compete with other areas due to many national roads in the county.
"“The whole road, the N62 from the boundary with Offaly to Thurles is in, as far as I'm concerned, a deplorable state. "A serious accident is going to take place there, we have road users that are avoiding it. This is not the first time I've raised this, and it's not the second time I've raised it, and we still have nothing done,” Cllr Lee added."
"“It's absolutely appalling that a national route like that is left, and it's been like that for a number of months now,” he said. "The Team Lowry councillor said that the state the road is left in is "disgraceful" and that something urgently needs to be done about it."
"“To think that's okay on a national route is absolutely disgraceful, so hopefully something can be done about it very soon,” he added. The route features on a new interactive Road Safety Authority (RSA) map highlighting locations of serious road collisions across the country. The most recent available data shows a serious crash occurred there in 2024."
"In response, district engineer Thomas Duffy said that the council would apply for funding to address the N62, but that there was a very limited pot of money available to the council. He added that the Thurles Municipal District would also be in competition with other districts in Tipperary due to the large number of national roads that traverse the county."
