Racing team's 8,000 bike robbed by masked men with big machete' in Putney
"Bike theft in London has become organised and brazen. Today it crossed the line into violent robbery. Senseless really, when you realise how much damage the bikes sustained as they were in the process of being stolen."
"I started loading the car and left two bikes on the roof, they were locked. They were unattended for maybe five minutes. After challenging the robbers, one of them jumped down, took a couple of steps towards me and grabbed a big handle sticking out of his trousers and showed me a big machete-looking knife down to his thigh."
"Organised gangs draw up lists of sought-after models. Stolen bikes have been found for sale on Facebook as well as in Russia."
Two robbers dressed in black arrived on a moped in Putney, south-west London, and stole an £8,000 carbon Handsling A1R0evoS bike from a locked roof rack of a Volvo XC40 belonging to Jakroo Handsling Racing. One robber jumped on the car, causing dents and cracking the windscreen. When team manager Tony Poole confronted them, a robber brandished a large machete and threatened him before escaping. A second bike was destroyed during the theft attempt. The incident highlights organised and violent bike theft in London, with stolen bikes reportedly sold on Facebook and in Russia. Police arrived within ten minutes and collected forensic evidence including a boot print.
