Councillors in Clonmel Borough District voted unanimously to confer the freedom of the borough on President Catherine Connolly. The motion, proposed by Mayor Pat English, cited her outstanding contribution to Ireland’s academic, cultural, artistic, and political life, and described the honour as a token of the high esteem held by the people of Clonmel. Independent councillor Richie Molloy supported the initiative, calling it a great honour and noting that nearly every President of Ireland has received the freedom of Clonmel. The freedom will be conferred during a special meeting on President Connolly’s visit to the town on Friday, May 22. Connolly was elected President in November and previously served as a TD for Galway West.
"Councillors at the May meeting of the Clonmel Borough District voted to give the freedom of the town to the President, following a motion from Mayor of Clonmel councillor Pat English. Cllr English's motion said that the freedom of the borough should be conferred on President Connolly for her "outstanding contribution to the academic, cultural, artistic and political life" in Ireland, and as a token of the high esteem with which she is held by the people of Clonmel."
""For all this and much more, the Mayor and the members of Clonmel Borough District consider her worthy to be enrolled in the roll of its Honorary Citizens," Cllr English's motion said. Supporting Cllr English's motion, independent councillor Richie Molloy said that conferring the freedom of Clonmel Borough District on President would be a "great honour.""
""Well done on the initiative, Mr Mayor, I think it will be a great honour for both the town and of course for the President, and I think nearly every President of Ireland has been granted the freedom of Clonmel. "It would be nice to have it early in President Connolly's term and well done to you for the initiative, so I'm quite happy to second the motion," Cllr Molloy said."
"Councillors in the district were asked to vote on the motion, needing a two thirds majority to pass, with the vote passing unanimously. The freedom of the Clonmel Borough District will be conferred on President Connolly during a special meeting during her visit to the town tomorrow (Friday, May 22). President Connolly was elected to serve as the President of Ireland in November of last year, previously serving as a TD in the Dáil for Galway West."
