The Metropolitan Police have begun distributing free doorbell cameras to Hackney residents as part of an initiative to capture footage of a persistent tree vandal. The vandal, who has caused significant destruction to saplings and trees by uprooting and girdling them, has evaded capture despite multiple attacks. Residents are urging local authorities for increased surveillance, with notable public calls for covert cameras. As incidents spread from Cazenove ward, councillors express collective concern for community safety, indicating a serious commitment to addressing the issue.
Mr Westcott urged the council to install a covert camera to help catch the tree vandal, stating, 'You've got to bait a trap here.'
Councillor Susan Fajana-Thomas mentioned that police were reviewing a decision not to arrest a suspect, while efforts are being made to gather doorbell footage.
Councillor Sarah Young noted that the tree attacks, initially concentrated in Cazenove ward, have spread to other parts of the borough.
Councillor Patrick Pinkerton described the vandalism as 'an attack on our entire community,' emphasizing the collective impact on residents.
