Park staff trained to tackle harassment of women
Briefly

To enhance the safety of women and girls in London parks, Getty Images Park staff are undergoing training developed by the Suzy Lamplugh Trust and University of Leeds to recognize and address harassment. This initiative allows public participation in training sessions and aims to turn bystanders into active participants in maintaining safety. Many women express avoiding parks after dark due to safety concerns, prompting calls for improved lighting and planning involving female perspectives. The initiative empowers individuals to intervene safely against inappropriate behaviors, fostering a supportive environment for all park users.
The kinds of behaviours this training would assist with include inappropriate comments, gestures, cat calling or even unwanted touching... anything that makes you feel unsafe is not OK.
People don't feel they can intervene. They worry about making things worse. The women we spoke to said they didn't feel safe to challenge the harassment.
