Moment two-tonne Land Rover reverses onto Met police car as officers cheat death'
"In that moment I thought - this is it. Everything happened so quickly but in those kind of incidents, it feels like time slows down. The wheel was directly in line with my face. I remember seeing it come towards us and I braced for it to ram us. But then it didn't stop. I remember feeling a mist of shattered glass all over me."
"I've been rammed before but nothing like this. I can remember the sound of the windscreen crushing, the tyres rolling over it and the windscreen starting to collapse. That sticks in my mind. I thought Angel was going to be crushed."
Constables Angel De Melo and Rishav Neupane were on patrol in Barnet when they spotted a two-tonne Land Rover Defender matching a reported vehicle description. They followed the SUV and began making police system checks. Without warning, when the vehicle turned into a residential street in Cricklewood, the driver reversed at speed directly into their stationary patrol car. The Defender mounted the police vehicle's bonnet, destroying the windscreen and crushing the roof before flipping onto its side. Despite the severity of the collision, both officers escaped without serious injury. They immediately pursued the driver on foot and arrested him after a brief chase.
