Met told 'young Londoners do not trust police'
"welcomes the report, including suggestions around how we best engage with and support young people in the capital. Ensuring children feel safe, both in their communities and at school, is a key priority"
"Because I am a woman, I know there have been times when the police use their power for bad reasons,"
"bad apples"
"catastrophic"
Many young Londoners distrust the Metropolitan Police and feel unsafe locally despite a 2024 'child-first' policing approach introduced after incidents such as the Child Q strip-search scandal. The Met eliminated all 371 safer schools officer (SSO) posts and cut youth engagement and diversion officers, removing specialist officers from schools in high-violence areas. These changes widened the gulf between young people and the force and prompted the London Assembly Police and Crime Committee to issue 11 recommendations to restore confidence. Views on SSO removal vary: some school leaders call the cuts catastrophic, while organisations such as the Runnymede Trust supported removal to reduce overreliance on police for minor behavioural issues.
