Met 999 call pickup time falling short of target
""positive direction of travel""
""is not sufficient to achieve the aspiration""
""made a real difference""
""This includes enhanced leadership and supervision of staff and changing the way we forecast demand, meaning teams are adequately resourced.""
The Metropolitan Police is not meeting its 90% target for answering 999 calls within ten seconds, recording 78% in the mid-year review compared with 85% for the same period in 2024. An inspection body noted a positive direction of travel but judged progress insufficient to reach the aspiration. Investment had previously improved performance, though recent figures show a dip that requires close monitoring. The force reports changes to leadership, supervision and demand forecasting to better resource teams. The public was urged to call 999 only for genuine emergencies; only 15% of calls were necessary between July 2024 and July 2025.
