McKevitt set to take top seat as Cathaoirleach of Dundalk Municipal District
Andrea McKevitt is expected to be elected Cathaoirleach of Dundalk Municipal District at the Annual General Meeting on June 9. She currently serves as Leas-Cathaoirleach of both Louth County Council and Dundalk Municipal District. The outgoing Cathaoirleach is Councillor Robbie Nash, who held the position for the 2025-2026 term. The Fianna Fáil/Fine Gael pact provides for the chains of office to return to Fianna Fáil for the 2026-2027 term, with McKevitt a favourite for appointment. A native of Cooley, this will be her first time in the top municipal civic role. She entered local politics in 2020 after being co-opted to Louth County Council. She has opposed the proposed Dundalk-Carlingford Greenway and is a fifth cousin of former US President Joe Biden.
"Fianna Fáil councillor Andrea McKevitt is expected to be elected Cathaoirleach of Dundalk Municipal District at the Annual General Meeting on June 9. The Argus understands that Cllr McKevitt, who currently serves as Leas-Cathaoirleach of both Louth County Council and Dundalk Municipal District, will be nominated for the role as part of the ongoing Fianna Fáil/Fine Gael pact."
"Councillor Robbie Nash (Fine Gael) is the outgoing Cathaoirleach, having held the position for the 2025-2026 term. Under the terms of the pact between the two parties, the chains of office are due to pass back to Fianna Fáil for the 2026-2027 term, with Cllr McKevitt a favourite for the appointment."
"A native of Cooley, it will be her first time serving in the top civic role at municipal level. She entered local politics in 2020 when she was co-opted to Louth County Council, filling the seat vacated by then-Senator Erin McGreehan. During her time on the council, Cllr McKevitt has been a prominent voice on a number of local issues."
"In recent years, she has been vocal in her opposition to the proposed Dundalk-Carlingford Greenway, raising concerns about its impact on residents, farmers and landowners in the area. She is also one of the ancestral relatives - a fifth cousin - of former US President Joe Biden, who welcomed his visit to Dundalk and the Cooley Peninsula in March 2023."
