David Hearns, aged 34, was imprisoned for assaulting two gardaí during an arrest. Hearns and a female accomplice stole over €400 worth of items from a hardware store, then drove a stolen car at high speed into a Dublin flat complex. When Gardaí Colin Byrne and Ben Fallon attempted to arrest Hearns, he instructed his accomplice to retrieve a bottle containing strongly alkaline corrosive liquid. The woman sprayed this caustic substance into one officer's eye, causing injury. Both officers were assaulted during the incident.
