London mayor welcomes new tourist tax powers
"I speak on a daily basis to those who work in tourism [and] hospitality, and one of the things we talk about is how London stays the number-one city in the world. "The frustration many of them have is the lack of investment in the public realm... this is one way for us to guarantee being the number-one city in the world.""
"It is essential that the government ensures mayors split the revenue with the local councils in their area to support these services, without which economic growth will suffer,"
"a "ground-breaking step for the future of devolution""
The Mayor of London will be able to introduce a tourist tax on overnight visitors, with devolved mayors in English regions given new revenue-raising powers. The levy would enable City Hall to raise money from tourists to attract more visitors, improve the tourist experience, and help prevent Londoners inadvertently suffering from over-tourism. Westminster council called for a significant portion of revenue to be invested locally and for a clear link between funds and local service improvements. The hospitality sector warned the policy could damage the industry. City Hall plans to work with boroughs and businesses on the scheme.
