London borough announces closure of two more schools as birth rate continues to drop
Briefly

The closures of Fenstanton Primary and Holy Trinity CofE Primary Schools in Tulse Hill have been confirmed by Lambeth council due to a significant decline in birth rates and falling school enrolment numbers in London. Factors such as Brexit, the cost of living crisis, and the pandemic have contributed to families moving away from the area, leading to about 1,000 fewer primary school-aged children in the borough over the past decade. Despite attempts to save the schools, proposals were deemed unviable, prioritizing the quality of education for remaining students.
Since 2022, we've done everything we can to avoid closures, closely monitoring the data, reducing admission numbers and helping schools work together.
No one wants to see a school close, and these decisions are never taken lightly. But we have to face the reality of what's happening.
Lambeth council said significant changes to the population had forced the decision, adding that Brexit and the cost of living crisis had contributed to lower numbers.
The south London borough is facing a stark challenge from falling enrolments, with nearly 1,000 fewer children going to primary school in the area compared to 10 years ago.
