"The man was detained by security after allegedly attempting to steal from a store on the street before gardaí then arrived on the scene. As the suspect attempted to flee by running from the department shop, an elderly pensioner in his 80s was injured. Described as a well-known figure in the area, a local said that the man, named Jimmy, is a "lovely gentleman"."
"After the alleged shoplifter was detained by gardaí and security, he then "became unresponsive" before he was then brought by ambulance to the nearby Mater Hospital, where he subsequently died. Gardaí have said that the Coroner has been notified and a post-mortem examination is set to take place. An eyewitness described the incident as "horrible" and was "shocked" to discover that the alleged shoplifter had subsequently died as a result of the matter."

The pensioner was left with a broken leg in the incident, but a Garda spokesperson describes his condition as "non-life-threatening" after he was taken to hospital."
