Grenfell memorial funding approved as peers call for justice
""The physical memorial that must be laid there on the Lancaster West is for the families, is for those who survived." - Lord Roe, former head of the London Fire Brigade."
""This is an easy Bill to pass. It is passed without opposition. It will not be so easy to pass a Bill that puts in the dock those people who are responsible for this injustice." - Lord Boateng, Grenfell Tower Memorial Commission co-chairman."
""Those responsible must be held to account. The fire at Grenfell Tower, which claimed the lives of 72 people, was a profound and available tragedy." - Baroness Taylor of Stevenage, Communities Minister."
A permanent memorial for the Grenfell Tower disaster victims will be built on the site of the tower in north Kensington. Government funding has been approved after a law passed through Parliament without opposition. The memorial will honor the 72 victims of the June 2017 fire, with design input from survivors and the local community. The architecture firm Freehaus was selected for the design, and a final design is expected next year. The Grenfell Tower Memorial Commission will manage the project, with work on dismantling the tower ongoing until 2027.
