Haringey Council is cracking down on fly-tipping and littering due to a significant increase in illegal dumping. Over the past year, the council imposed fines amounting to nearly 1.4 million following 2,554 penalty notices issued from April to March. As part of their intensified efforts, 15 additional enforcement officers will be hired. A recent public survey indicates strong support for tougher penalties, with 96% favoring heavy fines. Cllr Seema Chandwani emphasizes the collective responsibility to maintain clean streets, urging residents to report any incidents of fly-tipping.
We are determined to put an end to dumping. Keeping our streets clean is a shared responsibility and everyone must do their part.
A public survey carried out by the council claims overwhelming support for tough action, with 96% agreeing with heavy fines and 94% for penalties for littering and dog fouling.
Those who damage public spaces will be held accountable, Haringey Council cabinet member Cllr Seema Chandwani warned.
The stick' approach is part of the council's strategy for a collective sense of responsibility for public spaces.
