A proposed policy change in housing aims to create more options for young people and those looking to downsize. Minister John Cummins is advocating for revisions to planning regulations, proposing that modular homes can be built separately from existing dwellings. This initiative is focused on facilitating inter-generational living, allowing young adults to maintain independence while supporting their family close by. The initiative has received initial approval, with further consultations planned to address community needs and practical implementation.
The minister has made it clear that there needs to be planning exemptions which enable inter-generational movement between the main dwelling house and the smaller home, which would be situated to the rear of the property.
This would allow for a younger person to live independently of the family home in the short term.
Progress Ireland suggested that detached or attached ancillary dwellings be made exempt from planning laws, indicating that such a policy change could deliver significant benefits.
It is hoped that this will help provide more housing options and allow households to downsize.
