Residents in Moneymore welcomed the installation of double yellow lines after years of complaints about dangerous parking. Road markings were added on both sides of the road, extending from near a shop to the back of nearby bungalows. Residents reported that parked cars blocked pedestrian access, restricted bus movement, and prevented use of bus stop areas and disabled ramps. Some residents said enforcement would be essential because drivers may ignore markings. Concerns were raised that parking could shift to nearby areas without yellow lines. Residents also claimed many vehicles were left for long periods, including hospital-related parking, creating difficulties for buses and other vehicles to pass.
"Residents in Moneymore have welcomed the introduction of double yellow lines following years of complaints over dangerous parking, blocked roads and restricted access for pedestrians and buses. Local resident Wayne Kelly shared images on social media this week showing road markings being installed, writing: "Finally looks like we're getting the double yellows, today is a good day.""
"The move prompted a strong reaction online, with many residents saying the situation had become unmanageable. "Hopefully now my husband will have an easier time crossing the road," one resident commented, while another wrote: "Great news to wake up to. Well done to everyone.""
"Others said enforcement would now be crucial. "Now they just need to be enforced by council and wardens," one commenter said, while another added: "People don't care about double lines." Mr Kelly later confirmed that the yellow lines appeared to be going in on both sides of the road "all the way down to where the shop was and back of the bungalows"."
"Speaking afterwards, he said traffic wardens need to increase patrols as cars are regularly parked on both sides of the road, leaving only enough room for one vehicle to pass at a time. "It's gone beyond ridiculous," he said. "They're blocking the bus stop and disabled ramps. My mother is a pensioner and there is a bay for the bus that lets people on, and they're parking cars in there.""
