Chef Aldo Zilli calls for e-bike clampdown as his mother-in-law says her 'life is ruined' after being hit by one
Briefly

Chef Aldo Zilli has expressed his family's devastation following a serious accident involving his mother-in-law Maureen Welch, who was struck by an e-bike while crossing the road. The incident, which left her with a broken leg and significant changes to her daily life, has prompted Zilli and his family to advocate for tighter regulations on e-bikes in London. There's growing concern over the lack of rules governing their operation, with criticisms directed towards cyclists’ behaviors and the responsibilities of bike operators.
E-bike operators are ultimately responsible for ensuring their bikes are deployed and parked appropriately. Some local councils have limited powers to manage designated no-parking zones, but they cannot regulate schemes.
Ms Welch, who spent five weeks in hospital with a broken leg following the accident, said it's ruined my life.
We have had to adapt to a new life. I had to refuse work, Nicola my wife had to refuse work. It's been life-changing for the whole family.
There are no rules or regulations governing electric bikes... They can speed, run red lights, use mobile phones, and swerve onto pavements, she added.
