Borough's council tax hike set to be green-lit
Briefly

Waltham Forest Council's cabinet approved a 4.99% increase in council tax at a meeting on February 20. This rise will lead to an average additional cost of £100 per year for residents in band D properties. Council leader Grace Williams asserted that this decision is necessary to protect vital services. Other councils such as Redbridge and Newham are also increasing tax rates. The rise comprises a 2.99% council rate increase and a 2% social care precept increase, key components of the 2025/26 budget that also involves significant cuts.
Grace Williams, leader of the Labour-controlled council, stated there was no responsible alternative to increasing council tax to protect essential services while managing financial strains.
The 4.99% tax increase includes a 2.99% rise for council services and a 2% increase for the social care precept, the maximum allowable without a referendum.
